Tea Party Activism

I'm not a very political person. I'm not a Republican or a Democrat. I have at times thought we needed another party, maybe a better balance of the two prevailing ideologies, but I can't think of an animal to represent it. I know Republicans have the elephant and Democrats use the donkey. I would like to find an animal that represents intelligence and logic - but alas, they are all just animals.

I was recently jolted into political awareness by the emergence of "Tea Party Activism." These are Republicans who are protesting the U.S. government's recent decision to increase taxes. It is a characteristic of Republicans to avoid tax increases at all costs; however, in the government's new agenda, the only ones who are being asked to pay more taxes are those who make over two hundred and forty thousand dollars a year. The taxes are designated to help pay for a health care program that would enable poorer people to afford or obtain much needed health insurance.

In my party of Logic I am assuming that everyone who is protesting these tax increases makes over two hundred thousand dollars a year. Two hundred thousand dollars a year is a lot of money. These people are apparently ignoring the fact that the government has also granted the largest tax cut in the United State's history to the middle class, but the Tea Party Activists seem to be only concerned with tax legislation that affects the rich.

Whose side should we be on? I know that God does not align Himself with any man-made political party, although He is always on the side of the righteous who follow His Word. God's Word is the expression of His heart and God's heart is always with the poor and oppressed. There are two thousand three hundred Scriptures that concern God's care for the poor, and if we profess to be followers of God and His Word, then the Scriptures should be our guide in determining our political agendas.

Favoring the rich at the expense of the poor is not a Biblical principle at all; and yet, unfortunately many professed Christians are being caught up in "Tea Party Activism" without realizing the error behind the movement - or the party.

I love a good tea party - the kind that opens its doors to everyone and is willing to share the blessings that God has bestowed in a spirit of love and compassion with those who need our help the most. That's real Tea Party Activism.
