Now learn a parable of the fig tree; when his branch is yet tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is nigh: so likewise, when you shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
Truly I say to you, this generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled – Matthew 24:32-34. | Is 2012 the Beginning of the End? Within evangelical circles, it is commonly held that Jesus’ parable of the fig tree refers to Israel becoming a nation in 1948. While a big “IF” can also be applied to this interpretation, if it is accurate, and we combine it with Jesus’ statement that ‘this generation’ (the generation from Israel’s budding) would not pass until all these things be fulfilled – and if we count a generation as seventy years; then this calculation would position the year 2012 at the beginning of the last seven years before Jesus’ return. The last seven years is generally understood to be the tribulation that precedes Jesus’ second coming.
While many Christians have scoffed at the thought that 2012 holds any Biblical significance, it is a very definite “sign in the sky” (Rev. 8:12, Luke 21:11) that has not occurred in twenty-six thousand years. And while NASA assures us that there is no cause for any disruptions on earth due to this event, there are forces at work that cannot be detected by any super telescope that has been constructed by mere human hands.
Bible prophecies are accurate. Jesus’ prophecy that Jerusalem would be destroyed was precisely fulfilled in 70 AD. “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away” – Matthew 24:35. The events that the Bible predicts are going to transpire upon this earth and whether 2012 is an accurate marker in time of the beginning of the end of the world as we know it, despite the horrors of the tribulation to come, God’s people have the hope of a risen Savior coming to their rescue, just as the word of God describes.
From this calculation of the budding fig tree, we cannot predict the precise year of Jesus’ return because God’s word tells us that the time of the end would be shortened for the sake of God’s elect that will be alive prior to the Lord’s return (Matthew 24:22). Since we have no way of knowing how much time will be cropped from that last generation, we cannot precisely predict when Jesus will return, but we can be sensitive to the approximate season, – only if the original interpretation of the budding fig tree is accurate.
What we can know for certain is that there is a generation that will see the Lord return in all His splendid glory; my children, are you ready?
